Biodynamic is a step up from organic, and it’s a term used to talk about the way fruits, vegetables, and other plants are farmed. Biodynamic farming methods enhance the vitamin- and nutrient-density, as well as the active compounds of plants – and thus increase the quality of ingredients in the skincare products made from them. And, biodynamic farming reduces the environmental impact of growing these plants.
Adopting biodynamic farming methods is relatively new in the food and beauty industries. The thing about biodynamic farming is that it requires ruthless attention to detail. Here’s how it works:
Biodynamic Farming
In both organic and biodynamic farming methods, farmers focus on the health of the soil and restriction of synthetic chemicals, fertilizers, and pesticides. But, biodynamic farming goes further. Each biodynamic farm is considered its own ecosystem. Instead of having to fertilize soil, biodynamic farms restore the nutrients in soil naturally, by rotating crops, composting, interplanting, incorporating animals (and their manure) in the farm, and saving seeds. This helps farms stay whole and healthy for a very long time. And, where you have healthy soil, you have healthy plants.
The Biodynamic Calendar
Biodynamic farms even follow a specific calendar of when they plant and harvest their crops. Using lunar cycles to determine the optimal time for them to plant seeds and reap harvests, biodynamic farmers believe that when the moon is in ascent and a plant’s sap is rising, that’s the best time to harvest. By planting with the lunar planting calendar, the best time for biodynamic farmers reap the most nutritionally-robust plants.
Earning the Biodynamic® Certification
In order to earn a Biodynamic® certification, farms must undergo a very strict certification process. An outside, non-profit group called Demeter is responsible for biodynamic® certifications. Demeter was founded in 1928, and it now operates in more than 50 countries. It is so difficult to earn a biodynamic® certification that most skincare companies do not even attempt it.
Unlike organic certification, which is crop-focused, Biodynamic® certification requires the entire farm be certified. Currently, there are only 300 certified Biodynamic® farming operations in the United States.
